Should you check your work email when you go on vacation?

ALBANY, NY (NEWS10) — Today’s 98.3 TRY social dilemma comes from Maggie, but it’s one I can relate to because I’m going on vacation in a few weeks. This is the email:

Hi Jaime. I am currently having an argument with my husband and I hope you can help us solve this problem by using it as a social dilemma. We are going on vacation the last week of July. We go to the beach every year. My husband is mad at me because I check my work email every day when I’m on vacation. I don’t really work much, I just like to keep in touch with what’s going on in the office. It makes it easier for me when I get back from vacation. My husband is really mad at me because he wants vacations to be vacations, completely unplugging from work. I don’t think it’s a big deal to check my email every day. I take maybe 20 minutes a day to check and maybe respond to a few of them. He says it’s 20 minutes too long. I hope you and your friends can help us. Thank you very much Jaime. I love listening everyday!

It’s interesting because I’m going on vacation in a few weeks, and I had the same argument with my sweetheart. Eventually we came to a compromise. I will check my email once a day and contact you once a day. You know I like to stay in touch even when I’m on vacation. So I can take a few minutes to do that and respond to an email, but that’s it.

This is a good compromise as I was spending too much time checking in while I was away and it took away from our vacation together. So it worked for us.

What do you think? Can Maggie check her email or should we all log off completely when we go on vacation? let me know what you think on TRY’s Facebook page.
